A blessed day of the Annunciation to you all. It is a day of rejoicing in the blessed Virgin Mary saying YES to God’s will. Saying YES to caring for God himself. But, she also said NO.
I have been on Facebook and other social media sites and have already seen a great number of pictures and posts that all remind us to rejoice in Mary’s saying yes. Today, in our lifetime, in our world’s current circumstances, I want us to consider that she also said no.
What do I mean? Consider what many people, whether they realize it or not, treat as a god in their lives. Tik Tok fame, Snapchat views, Facebook and Instagram likes and follows, etc. These things, when life is good, all take the place of the one true God in our lives. I ask you to consider this, would God like you to spend as much time with Him as you do on your phone? Which do you spend more time with?
So what does this have to do with Mary saying no? She said no to the world. She said no to what people would think of her. She said no to running away ashamed. How many of us can say that we have chosen God, each and every day, when God calls us.
Take this day and give thanks for Mary saying yes to God. Take this day as well to dwell on what she said no to. Then consider this last point. Are you saying yes to God and no to the world more often or is it vice versa. Do you spend more time on politics or Jesus, holy living or fame, and what is god over your daily life?
If their name isn’t God, their opinion doesn’t much matter.
Stay safe and God bless you,
Father Jason Bowden
