resolve to dissolve

Happy and blessed new year to you. I pray that this new year brings you health, happiness and joy.

Now it’s time for that dreadful new year’s resolution. You might suspect by the title that this is just another resolution to lose weight. Well in some respects it is, I guess. What I am asking you to consider is to resolve to diminish yourself and do more for your fellow man. Sure it sounds good to declare that we will serve at a soup kitchen or volunteer at a homeless shelter, but, it is quite another to actually do anything. My Grandfather, God rest his soul, used to say “You can’t hit a homerun from the dugout and you can’t drive your car in park.”

So how to get started. First and foremost is to get in gear with that prayer life. I mean get serious about it. Set aside time during the day, maybe in small chunks to start and build on what you started as time passes. When I got to my current station, Vicar of St. Mark’s in Silvis, I asked the people there to “Say yes to God.” In response, as we say yes to hosting events and doing ministry work for the community as God presents them, He will in return bless us in ways we never saw coming. So give it a try, and it all starts with that prayer time, asking God for ways to love your neighbor.

<p value="<amp-fit-text layout="fixed-height" min-font-size="6" max-font-size="72" height="80"> Get involved, when opportunities arise, to help organizations that have proven to do fruitful work. If you see that a church or homeless shelter is offering ways you can help, check out their past endeavors. Don't just look at a Church and assume they are doing ministry outside of their four walls. The downfall is that if you feel led to help and an organization fails to produce fruit, you may get disenfranchised with the whole idea of helping or feeling like you can't ever do much to help. See, that God we talked about praying to, He's big, and I mean we can never wrap our human brains around, BIG. If He ordains it, it will reach people. Last, but certainly not least, be the change you want to see in the world. Start small but never limit God. He does what we fathom as the impossible. But, you will never know unless you resolve to dissolve. It’s all about less of you and more of Him. Let him know what’s on your heart, then listen. He may not tell you in your ear, but He will open doors you cannot close. If that’s what you want, then let go of the doorknob.

God bless you,

Father Jason Bowden
